City of Gilmer Fire Department Job Description Firefighter (full-time) Basic Job Description Protects lives and property through activities associated with fire prevention, rescue, fire fighting, hazardous materials and other emergency incidents and participates in the training and maintenance activities necessary to achieve that end. Essential Job Functions: RESPONDS promptly to fire alarms and other emergency calls when on duty and to other major incidents when notified while on duty. DRIVES fire apparatus and OPERATES pump and other equipment associated with fire fighting, rescue, salvage and maintenance. Enters burning buildings to accomplish extinguishment and/or rescue. ADVANCES charged and uncharged hose lines and APPLIES extinguishing agent to fires. PROTECTS property from unnecessary smoke and water damage by using salvage covers and proper ventilation fans. POSITION and CLIMB ladders to gain access to upper floors, roofs, and higher elevations to perform rescue, ventilations, and other tasks to be performed. CLIMBS, CRAWLS, and RUNS as necessary to accomplish fire extinguishment, rescue and personal safety. CARRIES and MOVES heavy equipment and /or objects necessary to accomplish fire extinguishment or rescue. Effectively COMMUNICATES verbally by means of two-way radio as well as person-to-person and in writing through completion of various records, reports, memos and letters. Other Important Duties: PROVIDES emergency medical service to fire or accident victims and ASSISTS the local medical service provider as necessary or when requested. INSPECTS buildings for fire hazards and COMPLETES pre-fire plans as appropriate. MAINTAINS apparatus, equipment, buildings, and grounds. PARTICPATES in all phases of training necessary to acquire the knowledge and skills required of the position. ASSISTS Company Officer in maintaining records and submitting reports. PERFORMS other duties as required. Additional Aspects of the Job: A basic knowledge of dispatch procedures. A general knowledge of a variety of subjects and skills related to firefighting, rescue, emergency medical services and hazardous materials. Ability to respond quickly with good judgment under stress in hazardous situations. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements: Must be at least TCFP firefighter basic certified or certifiable. Must have High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent Must have Texas Class”B” (or will obtain this level of license within 60 (sixty) days of being hired.) Must pass Fire Department written examination. Must pass physical agility test to be administered by department. Oral review board. Must pass physical given by City of Gilmer. Must pass a detailed background check.
